Educators support

Teaching Textiles can be a rewarding but sometimes isolating experience - especially if you're the only specialist in your school or tackling a new course for the first time. Our Mentorship Programme is designed to support teachers at all levels, offering personalised guidance, practical advice, and a valuable sounding board from experienced mentors who understand the challenges you face. Whether you're new to the profession or simply looking for fresh inspiration, we're here to help you grow in confidence and thrive in your teaching journey.

Looking for support?

Find a mentor

If you’re finding it difficult to plan and deliver lessons, facing gaps in your subject knowledge, or simply need someone to bounce ideas off and build your confidence, the Textiles Skills Centre mentorship programme is here to help. Many teachers, like Lucinda W., have felt isolated when teaching a new course without the right support: “After a year of stumbling through on my own with patchy success, I was given a lifeline from the Textiles Skills Centre Mentorship programme... Mentorship has been absolutely invaluable.”

Our experienced mentors offer personalised guidance, practical solutions, and reassurance tailored to your specific teaching needs. Whether you're new to the classroom or introducing a new subject, our friendly mentors are ready to support and inspire you - just complete the questionnaire via the link to get started.

Make a difference

Become a mentor

When starting out in teaching, it’s common to feel uncertain about how to plan and structure a scheme of work, or to struggle with gaps in subject knowledge without knowing who to turn to for support. For new or transitioning teachers - particularly in Textiles, where many schools only have one specialist - this can lead to feelings of isolation and a lack of confidence when tackling unfamiliar content or specifications. That’s where the Textiles Skills Centre mentorship programme makes a real difference. It provides a valuable space for teachers to connect, share ideas, and gain guidance from experienced mentors who understand the unique challenges they face.

As mentor Tamsin M. explains, “To be able to share my knowledge and know it is helping them become better, more confident teachers has made me feel like I’m making a real difference... there is nothing out there like it.”

Teacher support programmes

At the Textiles Skills Centre, our mission is to champion textiles education in schools and empower those who teach it. We are committed to helping teachers excel in their practice, inspiring students, and showcasing the lifelong value of textiles skills.

Thanks to funding from a range of sources—including significant support from the All Saints Educational Trust—we have been able to deliver impactful programmes that have supported hundreds of teachers and benefited thousands of students across the UK.

ASET AWARD 2025-26

Progression of textiles education from 5 to 11 years

Our research has shown that early exposure to textiles plays a key role in equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to thrive in a world shaped by climate change. Primary schools are a crucial starting point - where children can develop creativity, problem-solving, and practical skills through enjoyable, hands-on learning. Teachers are central to this, but they need effective support, training, and resources to deliver high-quality climate and sustainability education. Without learning to sew or work creatively with textiles at primary level, many pupils may miss out entirely on the vital skills and opportunities this subject provides.

Textiles Skills Centre was awarded a grant from All Saints Education Trust (ASET) to research what is happening in Primary schools and develop resources and training for teaching textiles in Primary school.

ASET AWARD 2022-2024

Become a great textiles teacher (BAGTT)

The Become A Great Textiles Teacher (BAGTT) programme was a one-year professional development initiative which ran for 2 years by the Textiles Skills Centre. It was funded by a grant from the All Saints Educational Trust, with match funding from the Textiles Skills Centre.

Designed to support ECTs/NQTs, trainee teachers, non-specialist teachers moving into textiles, and technicians working in textiles classrooms, the programme focused on building skills, confidence, and subject knowledge.

Aimed at those delivering or supporting GCSE Art & Design (Textiles) or D&T Textiles, the programme provided targeted mentorship and CPD training to 100 participants, led by experienced Art & Design and D&T textiles teachers and leaders.
